Turkana Eye Camp: Screening Outreach
Turkana Eye Camp: Screening Outreach
About This Project
Lokichogio lies in the far north-west of Turkana County, Kenya, close to the borders with South Sudan and Uganda. It is one of the most remote parts of the country, and many families here live far from any eye clinic. Most have never had their eyes checked.
EKDA is supporting an eye camp in Lokichogio. Before the camp can treat anyone, the people who need care have to be found, and that is what this project funds. From 23 to 28 November 2026, a local team will travel to 12 remote communities and screen people’s eyes. They will treat common infections and inflammation on the spot, and identify those who need further care at the camp. The team is two clinical officers specialising in eye care, two ophthalmic nurses, four ophthalmic assistants and 40 community health promoters.
Screening is usually the most expensive part of any eye camp. We are raising £4,715 to cover staff, transport, fuel, medicines and radio announcements. Even £6 pays a community health worker for a day.
